About us
What is Hope Christian Reformed Church?
Hope Christian Reformed Church was founded in 1986 as an offshoot from 1st Christian Reformed Church in Thunder Bay, Ontario. For nine years, we rented the Broadway United Church building on Francis Street in Westfort, sharing the building with that congregation. In early 1995 we purchased the old Crawford School building and its 2.3 acres of property on the corner of Francis and Crawford Street. Since May, 1995 we have been worshipping and developing programs from that site.
Currently about 360 people belong to our church with more than half under age 20. Many youth, education and study programs are part of our church's life. You can find out about them on this web page.
We welcome visitors to our Sunday worship services at 10 AM and 2:30 PM. We have a new, large sanctuary and most often have vibrant services with coffee served after the morning service. There is a nursery available for the youngest children. For children between 3 and 10 there are Sunday school classes during the second part of the worship service.
Where do we come from?
Our congregation is part of the Christian Reformed Church of North America. Headquartered in both Burlington, Ontario and Grand Rapids, Michigan, our denomination counts about 800 congregations and 300,000 members throughout Canada and the USA.
We are part of the Protestant branch of Christianity, finding roots in the biblical thought of 15th century Swiss theologian and pastor John Calvin. Such ancient historic confessions as The Apostles Creed, The Nicene Creed and the Athanasian Creed to which we subscribe place us in the family of believers in the Triune God--Father and Creator, Son and Saviour Jesus Christ and Holy Spirit.
As well our church accepts The Heidelberg Catechism, The Belgian Confession and the Canons of Dordt as what we call the "Three Forms of Unity." Those link us with the world-wide family of Reformed and Presbyterian Churches.
At the foundation of our faith is the Bible that we believe as God's infallible and fully trustworthy written revelation of himself to humanity. We believe that without Jesus Christ's birth, life, death and resurrection, humanity is lost in sin both now and forever. We believe that Jesus lived, died, was buried and rose from the dead so that human life can experience God's forgiveness, and can develop God-praising hints of future eternal harmony and peace in human life now.
The preaching, music and worship in our services start from the Bible and reflect the historic confessions and beliefs named above. Sermons always link daily life to God's will for living as expressed in the Bible and seen in God-pleasing human life.
